About the department


The Department of Soil and Water Resources was founded on 2/6/2008, and it is one of the important departments in the College of Agriculture, which contributes to solving many problems in the soil of Muthanna Governorate, especially the problem of salts and land reclamation, as well as conducting soil surveys and classification, paying attention to water resources and using modern technologies in the field of irrigation and combating desertification. The department organizes many axes with different specializations. The first batch graduated in 2012.

 

Department goals

 

1 . Preparing agricultural engineers specialized in soil science and water resources who are scientifically and technically qualified to work as intermediate cadres in public and private institutions, departments and companies in the field of this specialization through the preparation, education and training of undergraduate students in the department.
Developing the technical staff of the department through preparation courses and technical and technical training for the fields of work in the department inside and outside Iraq.
2 . Developing the teaching staff of the department by creating opportunities for postgraduate studies inside and outside Iraq in the basic specializations of the department, in addition to full-time teaching staff and the availability of research fellowships for them.
Preparing continuing education programs to follow up graduates of the Department of Soil Sciences and Water Resources and develop their technical and scientific skills by holding developmental courses on the developments of science in the specialty of the department and those wishing to develop their skills in this specialization. With the developments of science in the specialization of the department and those wishing to develop their skills in this specialty
3 . Work on developing the department’s curricula in cooperation with the corresponding departments in Iraq.
Participation in periodic scientific conferences in other universities to develop the teaching staff and consolidate scientific research in Iraq.
4 . Addressing the problems and obstacles facing the agricultural sector in Al-Muthanna Governorate, through scientific research for teachers according to the available specializations, and working to find appropriate solutions and recommendations for that.
5 . Preparing the necessary biological studies for soil management in Al-Muthanna Governorate, especially the interest in the program of surveying and classifying soils in the governorate, especially the Samawah desert.
Preparing special programs to develop the main irrigation methods in the governorate to face the escalating water crisis by controlling the available quantity and preserving it from pollution and improving its quality.
6 . Cooperate with other departments to work on spreading protected agriculture in southern Iraq because of its economic and social returns, and work to establish natural reserves in cooperation with relevant departments to develop the environment and preserve it from deterioration.
7 . Preparing annual cultural seasons for the department and inviting specialists from universities and other departments to enhance the knowledge aspect of the university and local community members.
8 . Assisting in expressing the scientific and technical opinion by the teachers and specialists in the department. This is done by allocating office hours for the teachers to receive visitors, answer their questions, and work to solve their problems in the field of soil, water and agricultural resources to consolidate the role of the university in serving the agricultural community.
